Turbulent history

In historical sources, Slunj is first mentioned in 1390 as a fortified city.
After the defeat of the Turks, Croats elected in 1527 Ferdinand of Habsburg for the Croatian king. Then begins the establishment of the military border, and Slunj becomes in 1579. a military headquarter. Beginning of the 19th century was marked by Napoleons rule, and after the French withdrawal followed Austrian rule. After the abolition of the Military Frontier in 1873.

Slunj is granted the status of the city. In the 20th century it became a transit village. In November 1991. Serbian terrorists have occupied Slunj, and it was released on August the 6th in 1995. Today Slunj is within the county of Karlovac, it outspreads on 392,54 km2 and includes 67 villages with the population of 6096. In its surroundings are three major rivers: Slunjčica, Korana and Mrežnica. The climate is moderate, with mild summers and moderately cold winters.
