The Napoleon magazine

The French rule was an interesting period for the area of Slunj and Rastoke, which was the eastern border part of Napoleon’s Empire.
Although Napoleon’s wars were primarily those of conquest, they also contributed to spreading new and progressive ideas of the French Revolution, such as the elimination of the feudal and church privileges, equal rights for all citizens in courts, respect for every nation and the introduction of the national language in schools and everyday life, liberalisation of trade, introduction of basic democratic rules in public offices, civil marriage and freedom of denomination.

The French were known to have experts in roads and bridges construction, as well as building grain silos, which were necessary during the war to feed and hire the impoverished population. The Napoleon Magazine was built in Slunj in the 19th century. Napoleon’s army used it to store weapons and food.
